Dr Amin Asfor obtained his PhD from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. He is a virologist, currently working as a lecturer in Virology and Immunology at the Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Surrey. He is also the Head of the UK National Reference Laboratory for Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), UK, where he serves as a disease consultant, diagnostic tests commentator, and cattle experts group member. Dr. Asfor’s research on virus antigenicity, immune escape, and evolution, and novel diagnostics for vaccine quality control monitoring has been recognized. He is experienced in working on various viruses, including picornaviruses, pestiviruses, birnaviruses, and coronaviruses. Part of his contributions to the field of virology was recognized by the BBSRC Innovator of the Year award panel as a finalist in 2019 under the international impact category. Dr Asfor is a passionate lecturer of virology, basic immunology, and One Health topics to scientists and veterinarians, with more than 150 students per year. He also supports early-career scientists in their research activities and currently supervises and co-supervises five PhD students. Dr Asfor has a national and international collaboration with colleagues at APHA, the Pirbright Institute, UK universities, and international partners. He serves the scientific community by acting as a reviewer in various scientific journals, as a member of the BBSRC pool of experts as a committee panel member, Fellow of the Surrey Institute for Sustainability. He is also a fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2021.
